From the time we officially fell in love again, there was no question of whether we’d get married or not. It makes for a boring proposal story because Scotty and I had our wedding date set before we were even engaged: May 9, 2003. I guess you could say we were engaged to be engaged.
I picked out my own ring, so I had a general idea of when it might be coming. My only request regarding the proposal was that Scotty get permission from my dad. That was the only factor that delayed our engagement. My dad is scary. He has a very serious demeanor and a few guns. I’m his only biological daughter, so he’s protective of me. During the few months following Scotty’s return from his mission, my dad consistently asked me about Scotty’s plans for education and whether or not he had money in the bank. Since I didn’t live with my dad, I had no way of telling when Scotty had talked to him. That was the only element of surprise in the proposal.
On January 4, 2003, Scotty and I had just finished watching a movie with some friends. It was late, and as Scotty and I left my friend’s house, he asked me if I wanted to go for a drive. We drove south and up to a look-out where we could see the city lights. We sat on the tailgate of his truck and enjoyed the sight. Scotty was making meaningless conversation and saying some really weird things. He seemed nervous. I suspected what was going on, and I wanted to say, “Are you going to ask me to marry you or what?!?” but I refrained from doing so just in case I was wrong. I couldn’t stop staring at the shape of a small square box in Scotty’s right pocket. It had to be my ring. It just had to be.
In the midst of the mindless chit-chat, Scotty started looking on the ground for something. “I dropped something,” he informed me, and then he slowly made his way to his knee. He took my hand, told me he didn’t really drop anything (duh!), and asked me to marry him. I said yes. Maybe we hugged. Maybe we kissed, but I don’t recall for sure since all I can remember is Scotty running off to pee in the bushes because he’d been so nervous to propose.
To be continued…

For some reason it kind of makes me sad that your proposal wasn’t a big surprise. Maybe it’s just because I love surprises, haha! But nevertheless, it sounds like it was a great proposal! And I love your engagement pictures! You guys look so much younger, even though it’s only been 4 years.

I dunno…I have to say, the whole thing was a little anti-climatic for me. Then I realized that I’ve only heard the story from Craig (aka name-him-whatever- you-want). So, perhaps your entire engagement/proposal story was NOT based around Scotty’s need to pee. That in mind, maybe you should’ve had Craig guest-blog this one for ya…..hate to break it, but his version was a lot more amusing! Although, blogs do NOT come with the antics and gestures that Craig’s proposal story includes so maybe this was the best that could be.

I actually like this story, it seems a lot like “real life” instead of some over-the-top, hollywoodized version. He had to pee, you knew it was coming, you already had your answer but let him ask the question anyway. That somehow seems healthier than ring in the desert or a room drowning in flowers. Maybe I’m just too cynical - but the “real stuff” gives me butterflies and the cheesy, romantic mush makes me roll my eyes and wonder what they are trying to cover up or apologize for. :o) Love you girly!

I think it’s totally cute. I love when boys get really nervous and say dumb things. It reveals their heartbreaking vulnerability to us.

It does seem real life, as Heidi says. And I think it’s sweet that you were engaged to be engaged. Love that!

I love this story! It’s adorable. And seriously, doesn’t EVERY girl have SORTA an idea that the “question” may be coming soon? When Kevin took me to San Francisco (the city where we met, fell in love, blah blah) for the weekend back in August 2005, I TOTALLY KNEW something might be up. I just didn’t know WHEN he’d do it. And when he totally forgot to fall to a knee, and then asked me to marry him all nervous-like, and when I said yes and we just stood there with goofy grins on our faces until he said, “Oh, shoot! I do have a ring! I just forgot to pull it out! Shoot! Here it is! See?” it just made me love him all the more.
Hollywood proposals are pish-posh. I’ll take my nervous, fumbled proposal any day of the week!

The peeing thing is hilarious! I love your proposal story. It’s good to have a story that is 100% your own, and not just another version of the ring in the dessert or whatever other cliche proposal.
Those pictures are truly stunning.

Those are great pictures.
Also, I can’t wait to hear Scotty’s side of the story in which your dad ran after him with a gun shouting “you ain’t takin’ my baby girl away!”
